Today we decided to go as far north as we could. So we loaded the car and filled the tank and set off for the beautiful sites of the Island.
Heading up to Korithi to the windmills and lighthouse, in the northwestern tip of the island. Approximately 9 km from the village of Volimes, 2 kilometres from the beautiful little port of Agios Nicholas, and approximately 40 kilometres from Zakynthos town.
Volimes – The village is divided into three – kato – ano – pano (lower – middle – upper). Volimes and was once famous for the amazing craft work, handmade rugs and tablecloths, you can still find stores with local products including oil, honey and sweets.
The surrounding area of Agios Nicholas, the picturesque port, with its pretty fishing boats and the ferry to Kefalonia , our neighbouring island. Askos, with the traditional little stone park and the lovely variety of animals. Varvara, a small village between Agios Nicholas and Askos, Elies the little village with its traditional park with antique farming tools. Korithi, with the beautiful windmills and the steps to the amazing blue caves, is by far one of the most fantastic photo spots. Finally the uninhabited islet Agios Andreas, which you pass on the way down to Porto Selena coves. This secluded cove is beautiful for a refreshing dip.
Leaving Volimes and its surrounding villages you can head over to Anafonitria and the Monastery of Agios George. From here take a short drive to the viewpoint of the famous Navagio. Don’t forget to visit the Monastery of Agios Dionysios, the patron saint of the island. It’s also where you can find his slippers, waiting to be changed on his feast day in August.
The northern part of Zakynthos has some wonderful unspoilt areas. Well worth a day off the beach resorts.
