On hiring your car, a must for all to visit is the North West coast of Zakynthos. Here you will find the ‘Shipwreck’ or ‘Smugglers Cove’, also called the ‘Navagio’, probably the most famous beaches in Greece and one of the Worlds most photographed. The shipwreck happened in the 1970’s, when the ship was grounded after hitting rocks in bad weather whilst being pursued by Greek Navy vessels, as it was carrying contraband cigarettes. This amazing beach can only be accessed by boat. The best views are from above, but do be careful of the sheer cliff face and the 300m drop. The best time of the day to get your photos is as early as possible (approx. 1100hrs) before the day trip boats fill the cove. If you are going to visit by boat aim to have finished your trip before 1500hrs as the sea may have a swell after this time. One will be amazed at the colours of the sea in contrast with white cliffs. If you are going to visit by boat do take refreshments with you as there are no amenities on the beach.
The best way to get to the 'shipwreck View Point' is to follow the snake like road from the small village of 'Katastari'. You will need to drive on this road for approximately 40 minutes on the narrow mountian road passing the coastal sights of 'Makris Gialos' (full of caves), Xigia Beach (sulphur beach), 'Mikro Nisi' (small island), finally reaching a steep uphill junction with sharp turning to your left. From here onwards head up into the hills of Zakynthos and follw the signs or use our 'Google Maps' GPS system to get you there. Always remember to leave your car locked, in gear with hand brake on, lights switched off and keys stored somewhere safely. If you have an open top car close the roof for safety and possible rain shower.
